For most of the last 1,000 years people had believed Gudrid Tornbjanardottir to be nothing more than a myth.  Now archeological sites in Iceland, Greenland and North America prove that this remarkable woman of the Vineland Sagas must have actually existed. Nancy Marie Brown brings these sites to life with her vivid descriptions and her stiring narrative of portions of the Sagas that tell of Gudrid by name. Her explanation of translations for Norse words that are hard to translate help one to understand the hard culture of men an women in hard times.  They also leave me with a wish for a Viking fleece cloak that has not been made in large numbers for a long time. This because, having been made to resist ocean salt spray, it sounds warmer and dryer than any of the coats I have ever owned.

If you are a fan of history and Vikings in particular you may gain a great deal from this gem of a book. Though to anyone who does not like archeology it will be like nails on a chalkboard.
