the site you give will not let me track a package without a verification code along with the tracking number.  So I can’t track that package at all but

thank you for finally letting me know what company has my package.  As to the peacock dress it is the one Item in your whole catalog I wanted most.

You do not carry enough dresses that will fit a woman who is 42″ 36″ 45″ and are modest enough to fit the standards of my Religion. which requires

that both men and women show no part of the body from the neck to the knees except the the arm to just above the elbow.  The two dresses that have

been shipped will be worn with leggings to accommodate these rules.  So please just refund the cost of the third dress.  If I ever get the two that you

claim have been shipped then I might consider looking through you catalog again but I had to look at every dress you carried to find these 3 that I

thought would fit and meet my standards without making me look fatter than I already am.

We wish to apologize for the difficulties you have been experiencing and regret to hear that you are not totally satisfied with

We are extremely sorry for your disappointment. It is our obligation to reach out to every customer who is not fully satisfied. We will therefore also offer

Package was received by me on Nov. 18th.  I am keeping this ticket open until I have had a chance to try on the dresses.  Hopefully they fit, but I am

still not very happy with Sammy Dress.  The tracking services were not helpful.  If I recall correctly I paid extra for a tracking number.  This service

should have included the sending of a USPS tracking number once it was handed over to the USPS.  The fact that the one dress I liked the most was

sold with it being out of stock left me disappointed and the whole process of going through your catalog to try and find dresses that would fit and meet

the modesty standards of my religion left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Poet At Large Reviews, Convention, WesterCon 67/CONDuit 24/FantasyCon 2014   Leave a comment

The night before a convention I am always filled with excitement and anticipation that makes it hard to sleep. Imagine when three different conventions converge on your currant home city over one holiday weekend. They may be separate events but they all blur together in one wonderful collage of color light and information overload. I spent July 3rd through 6th in such an overwhelming situation and I will try to review it for you as best I can.

I spent the morning of the 3rd in the Salt Lake City, City Creek, Marriott Hotel at WesterCon looking at art and talking with friends. Also passing out my card to venders and authors.  At lunch time I attended the book launch party for the Authors from “Writing Excuses” the pod cast series. For those who have never listened to Writing Excuses they are Epic Fantasy Writer Brandon Sanderson, Horror writer Dan Wells, Web Cartoonist Howard Tayler and Puppet Mistress Mary Robinette Kowal. There anthology “Shadows Beneath” is one I would very much like to review. I did manage to have brief conversation with Guest of Honor Larry Correia on Saturday but it was mostly about finding food and other needs before the mass book signing.

After lunch I had seen what was at the Marriott and went across the street to the Salt Palace to see what was at FantasyCon.  They would not let me in the main entrance of the building even though I was using a walker. Instead they sent me a block in the heat to the South end of the building This means that once I got in I was suffering heat cramps and my back was already starting to hurt. We complained to security and were informed that the hired security had not been informed that they would have people crossing the street to the main entrance from WesterCon until after both Conventions were opened and they had not hired enough security to man both doors. This problem was made worse on the second day when they started insisting that people enter only from the main South entrance. It was not fixed until Saturday which was too little too late for me because I ended up on the floor in back spasms for at least half an hour at the mercy of two nice EMTs while my daughter held the hem of my dress in place to cover my dignity. This does get ahead of my story but needs to be said because the situation effected everyone who was disabled not just me. I saw one woman wheel in the South Entrance in a manual wheelchair with sweat beading down her face and could not help but think if I feel this bad she looks worse and she had no companion to help her like I had my dear husband.

At the entrance of FantasyCon.

At the entrance of FantasyCon.

What went on inside the Salt palace was wonderful but in the air conditioned building walking was not so bad. The first think that greeted you on entering the main entrance were two giant Sentinel Statues made of foam and painted to look like stone. There were many great marvels on your journey between booths. Which I got pictures of on Saturday when I was with my daughter the camera did not work the first day and the second day I spent most of my time preparing for the Masquerade competition at WeasterCon. I did not go near the celebrity guest tables at FantasyCon because times being what they are I did not have Money to spend on getting in line to talk to any of them. Yes folks these days you have to buy a ticket for an autograph just to speak to most actors. Authors on the other hand you can get up close to so I did speak to Kevin J. Anderson briefly. Mostly about how big my daughter had gotten since he had first met me but also about crossing each others paths in a cross walk.

As the gentelman in the booth with him said. “Why did Kevin J. Anderson cross the road? Because there was a book signing on the other side.”

I am told that most people entered the Cosplay Competition at FantasyCon on Saturday Night and were unaware that there was a competition on Friday because the local CONDuit Masquerade which was joined with the WesterCon Masquerade is usually held on Saturday but was moved so people could enter events at both Conventions. A few such Snafus were inevitable.

The only thing I have to report from the Masquerade is a special prize for the Jewelery I made as part of my costume. I am use to a Masquerade that goes on for at least an hour but due to the circumstances this left us with 7 entries in total. this did however allow them to hold the Belly Dancing recital at an earlier hour than usual. The dancers were all very good and I finally understand why Charles Galway has such defined leg muscles. Yes a man can be a belly dancer too and you can enjoy it no matter whether you are attracted to men or not. It’s about artistry and skill no matter who is dancing.

After the Masquerade I had to be unpinned from my costume I had a zipper bust on me at the last minute. so I went from party to party in a Klingon forehead and half my Steam punk costume from the morning. This was the night of July 4th and fireworks could be seen all over the valley from the balconies of the Marriott. We enjoyed food at parties for upcoming conventions and Filk singing. Filk is a type of Folk music with Fantasy, Science and Science Fiction themes.  We were suppose to leave for the night at 11:00 but my oldest son who I use the nickename Drake for online decided to step out of the hotel without telling anyone while his phone was not working. This mean they spent half an hour on a Code Adam looking for him all over the hotel.  If you were there and heard about the Code Adam search for a 16 year old boy he is home safe and sound. For the record my sons call me Matoo (our Family word for step mother).

On Satuday I spent my time during the day devoted to time with my daughter who we shall call Roo. I do not post her given name online just like I don’t post my sons’ names. She is 11 and loves Fantasy and Sci-Fi on a level that I think drives my Ex-Mother-In-Law nuts. This was her first time at a convention but she enjoyed it very much. On Friday she went around with her Patoo (our family term for stepfather) at FantasyCon and Saturday with me at both conventions.

This picture was taken with Patoo's cell phone. I made the ears and tail to match her natural hair color.

On our way to FantasyCon Saturday we stopped and rode a peddle cab that was done up as a Dragon’s head.

Inside the Salt Palace we had much fun with the our working camera and not only got people for my top ten costumes but also got pictures with the backdrops and props for our keepsakes. I will share a few of them with you.

On our way out of the convention we came across something that had to be shared.

I'm not sure how to spell what this is but and Dr. Who fan will know what it is.

Steam Punk Dalek

After my Sweet Roo had collected a drawing of herself as a Zombie from the WesterCon dealers room she went back to her grandmother’s house and we continued the convention as a foursome with my Dear husband Floyd and my sons Drake and BedBug wandering about. because of what had happened on the night of the 4th my sons were told they had to stick together all day. This means that by days end they were both sick of each other but I was trying to teach them both a lesson about responsibility anyway.

I went to the mass book signing which gave me a chance to talk to friends and meet new authors as I pass out more cards and got more books to add to my stack of review submissions. At this point I have a stack that is fairly deep, so It will take me a while to reach the last books submitted. I got to talk to Paul Genesse who started me on this whole review blog notion. I have had to thank him for that more than once because I love to read and to blog.

At 9:30 there was a Filk Concert by Mark Osier dedicated to the members of the Writing Excuses cast with a set inspired by each of the four writers. Mary Robinette Kowal got up and sang “Rubber Ducky” as part of the set dedicated to her and Mark’s rendition of “A Boy and His Frog” left many in tears. For those who don’t know “A Boy and His Frog” is dedicated to the memory of Jim Henson and is sung from the point of view of Kermit The Frog. Mark’s Kermit voice is very good, so it was easy to believe Kermit was singing. His encore was “I want to be Han to your Leia” which is a great piece of New found Filk. After this we left for the night.

On Sunday the 6th only WesterCon was still going with FantasyCon having closed the night of the 5th. This was the only day I was able to sit in on any panels. These panels left me with a need to finish some original projects I have been working on. The results of these projects will spill into this blog as I read some books for research and hopefully enter some of my art in a few art shows.

Some special events I missed include a screening of the film “The Last Unicorn” which I have on DVD anyway. This screening did have the Author of the book it is based on present but I did not have a copy of his book for him to sign. all the Cosplay events at FantasyCon because I was just not able to be in two places at once. All panels held on the first 3 days because I had so much to do those days.

I had a wonderful time but I spent the week after in much pain and even had a migraine so bad that the air conditioning was too loud. The migraine is why this is posted a day later than I had hoped.

Now I give you my top costume picks. One thing to note is that in order to be considered for top costumes I have to catch you in a picture so if you feel your costume was better but you never had me take your picture I am sorry. There were a few people who missed out because they did not stop for me and being in need of the walker or a cane I can’t move fast. I am also obligated by law to ask permission to use your picture.

Honorable Mention "Dead Pool in a cute hat" I know that I got you without the hat too but that one just did not make top ten even though you made a wonderful replica costume.

Poet At Large Reviews, Notice Upcoming event, WesterCon 67 and FantasyCon   Leave a comment

I have not posted a review in a few weeks because I have been working on preparations for the upcoming WesterCon 67 and FantasyCon, Fourth of July weekend extravigansa in down town Salt Lake City, Utah.  I will be presenting a costume on stage and I have been sewing and choreographing and practicing and researching.  It’s all coming together, I think that it will be worth all of the work, though in the end I will be sore and tired I will be stronger for the work I have put in.  Those of my readers who see me at the con will be a little surprised that I will be using a walker for the con but will not be using support on stage. This is because I need the walker to protect myself from overzealous crowds who might knock me down.  Under my own power I can do martial arts and dance to a certain level. I even recently found out the hard way that I can do a dodging roll if given the right circumstances.  Though I ended up with an injured neck and a very bruised knee for my troubles.  I will never be able to do some of the fancier moves or steps I once did but for now so long as I don’t push too hard or get trampled like I did at ComicCon Salt Lake I should be able to show you all what I can do.  The Masquerade costume stage presentation will be Friday the Fourth of July from 7pm till 9 pm. Hope to see you all at the Con.

Poet At Large Reviews, Movie, Ender’s Game   Leave a comment

I just got back from watching a movie that I have waited nearly half my life to see.  ‘Ender’s Game’ based on the Orson Scott Card novel of the same name is by far one of the best Book Adaptations I have ever seen.  My only disappointment being that at the end of the movie Ender’s sister Valentine dose not go with him off to his further adventures like she did in the books.

I was assigned to read the book by one of my high school English teachers.  It was so enthralling that I read it in a 24 hour period in spite of my dyslexia.  In more recent years I have had the chance to have a few thought provoking conversations with some of the best published authors.  This does include Mr. Card who managed to give me a whole new perspective on writing science fiction.  I may not agree with him on some of his more recent comments, but he created a thought provoking story and I am certain he would be pleased with how it was brought to the silver screen.

Poet At Large Reviews: Convention: Salt Lake Comic Con 2013   1 comment

I would have had this post out sooner but it has taken me longer than usual to recover from the convention and to go through the costume pictures. I will also state that due to my good camera failing all of these pictures are taken with cell phones.  Some of them are blurry.  Also many of them were taken by my niece so I may not have gotten permission from everyone to post their picture.  If you see your picture in this entry and wish it to be removed please contact me by the e-mail at the bottom of the article.

On September 5th, 6th, and 7th the Salt Palace in down town Salt Lake City, Utah was filled beyond capacity with all members of Utah fan-dom that could find their way in the door.  They were there to meet legends Stan Lee, William Shatner, Adam West, Burt Ward, Kevin Sorbo, Peter Mayhew, Lou Ferrigno and many others.  I managed to get short interviews with Writer Kevin J. Anderson and Actor Dwight Shultz.  Most of the really big name celebrities were not giving interviews and you could not get within 20 yards without paying for a ticket.  I understand why, but it makes it hard for a blogger on a vendor’s pass to get what she wants.

I was there with ‘The Seventh Fleet Star Trek Fan Clubs’ and the ‘Artemis Bridge Simulator’.  The simulator was run by the Tooele chapter of the Seventh Fleet, or U.S.S. White Buffalo.  Once people learned that it was free to have a go at the Artemis it was hard to get everyone who wanted to play a slot.  By the evening of Saturday every slot was taken and if you were not there to take your slot someone else would get it.

One of the fun things about a multi day convention is the opportunity to ware more than one costume.  On Thursday I was a Neko or Japanese cat person, on Friday I was a Ninja and on Saturday I was a Steam Punk.  Here is one woman that my niece caught on camera two different days as two different My Little Ponies.

Here is Pinkie Pie.

Not sure which pony this is but she has an attitude.

On the first day I saw something big and scary roaming between booths and just had to get a picture.  In the process I was knocked down and slightly trampled.  This was only my first trampling over the course of the convention.  I suffered a spine injury in 2007 and must use a cane to walk.  My cane got kicked out from under me by crowds that were over the capacity of the building.  A friend of mine who needs a cane and leg braces was also knocked over and trampled more than once as well.  Fire Marshals made the convention stop selling tickets and kick 3,000 people out of the building on Friday and on Saturday they made them kick out 7,000. Hopefully next year they will run everything through the Fire Marshal before hand so that no one gets seriously injured.

This animatronic dinosaur was cool to watch but dangerous to some crowd members.

This animatronic dinosaur was cool to watch but dangerous to some crowd members.

Contributing to the danger of the situation was a  company handing out free energy shots.  Many members of the crowd were hyper from excitement already, the addition of caffeine and crowding  can cause a frenzy in a person with anxiety issues.  I did not accept any energy shots myself as I have a heart condition and caffeine makes me dreadfully ill.  Sadly not everyone is willing take responsibility for themselves.

The raptor was not the only thing roaming the isles.

On Friday morning my Niece and I got to speak with Actor John de Lancie.  He was a very nice person and he complimented Tatiana on her fake teeth.  Which she had made with a bobby pin and some fake finger nails that she had filed to points then hot glued to the bobby pin.  Mr. de Lancie also stopped by the Artemis to have his picture taken with the group running it.  I do not have permission to post the picture so I will not out of respect.

The Mandelorian Mercs  were having a jail and bail to raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation.  The whole point of Make a Wish is to give children who are very sick one Wish while they have the time to enjoy it.  I didn’t have much cash on me as most of the time I only use a debit card but it was worth a few dollars to put my niece and nephew in position for this photo.

It is a poets nature to share profound parts of them self with total strangers.  When Two poets cross paths and each recites one of their best works it can be a very special moment.  They are kindred souls even if they will never meet again.  They will remember each other and be glad for a rare moment when they know someone understood.  Someone saw a piece of their soul laid bare and knew the emotion that had caused inspiration.  This Gentlemen and I shared one of those moments.  May he always be inspired.

I am the Ninja in this photo. I don't know Tony Stark's real name but I know he is a fellow poet.

On Saturday Tatiana and I both dressed as Steam Punks.  Steam Punk is a genera of Sci-Fi that involves modern inventions that are steam powered and Victorian dress with gears or machine parts as accents. We tried on some very lovely corsets from Damsel in this Dress.  Too bad they were almost $300 a piece.  I have since looked at their web site and found a slightly cheaper corset style that they make to the measurements you give them.  I’m hoping that I can buy it for future use with the idea that I might wear it over jeans on a regular day just to feel pretty as well as part of a costume or two.

If you look closely at the photo you will notice a Star Trek com-badge with a black ribbon on it.  The ribbon is because the Seventh Fleet lost one of her ship Captains on the morning of Monday Sept. 2nd.  Captain K’Ruth Burns of the Ursa Major suffered heart failure on Memorial day morning and she will be missed by many local Sci-Fi and fantasy fans.   Myself among them.

The interviews I got were a pleasure even if they were short.  It is with great joy that I share them with you now.

Kevin J. Anderson is one of the most prolific writers of Science fiction.  We first met at Life The Universe and Everything in 2006 and I have reviewed some of his more recent novels for this blog.

Q: What age did you decide you wanted to be a writer?

A: I knew I wanted to be a writer when I was five years old.  I saw a science fiction movie, ‘War of the Worlds’ and I knew from that point on I wanted to create stories like that.

Q: How did your collaboration with Frank Herbert’s son Brian come about?

A: I was always a big Dune fan, read all of Frank Herbert’s books.  I loved them and wished somebody would finish the story Frank left incomplete at his death.  When Brian and I discussed completing the story, we brainstormed and came up with so many ideas we have now done more than a dozen novels.

Q: Where did Dan Shamble Zombie P.I. come from?

A: I have written so many big sf epics and major serious novels that I Wanted to do something all out FUN.  I love the humor and lighthearted spirit in this series. and Dan shamble is a lovable and hilarious guy.  I have several more adventures in mind.

Just for the record I look forward to those adventures.  While reading the first two Dan Shamble novels I laughed so hard I needed my Asthma inhaler.

Upon seeing that Actor Dwight Shultz was at the con I must admit to suffering a Fan Girl Squee moment.  It was very hard to maintain my professionalism long enough to ask for a few short questions and I am glad that we agreed to do the interview the next day since this gave me time to compose myself.

Q: What age did you decide you wanted to be and actor?

A: Since the age of six.

Q: Your two most beloved roles are Murdok from ‘The A-Team’ and Reginald Barkley from ‘Star Trek’  How much of yourself is in each character?

A: Murdock is more of a fantasy but there is a great deal of the real me in Barkley.

Q: We talked about ‘The Long Walk Home’ is there anything you would like to say for the record about your role in that very powerful film?

A: The important thing about the movie was showing that ordinary people harbored racist feelings, not just the KKK. That is what allowed racism to thrive.

Now we come to my top costume pics of the Con.  There were so many good costumes that it was hard to pic and I had to add a group or couple category just to be fair.  First Honorable Mentions.

Poet At Large Reviews, Real Life, Independace Day In A Small Town   Leave a comment

I am sorry for the long time I have taken to post this entry.  Between health issues family obligations, computer troubles and power outages it’s a wonder I manage to post at all.

The Parade Begins

The Parade Begins

I was raised to Salute the Flag of Our Nation and respect Veterans, to sing our Anthem proudly and to say our Pledge ‘One Nation Under God.’ My father signed up with the Utah National Guard when he was 17 and stayed in till they discharged him at retirement age. I am proud of my father and it’s because of him that Independence Day means so much to me.

I may live in Salt Lake County, but I was born in Tooele County.  In Tooele County the biggest July 4th celebration is in the Town of Grantsville.  My oldest sister has lived in Grantsville for the last 20 plus years. She has a nice yard where we pitch our tents when my husband has the time off around the Holiday. It’s best to camp starting on the night of the 3rd. This allows you to get a good seat for the parade. They line up everyone for the parade right in front of my sister’s house.  This means that you have to go further down the route to get a good seat.

Beauty Pagent winners have been a part of the American Parade for a long time. When I was a little girl I wanted to be one, but as an adult I am glad I never was. I have found my way into the parade in more simple ways. I was in it with my clog dancing class and then I was in the Tooele Junior High Marching Band.

Tooele County is home to the Utah Fire Museum and some of the still working engines will be part of the parade along with the modern ones still in service. If you are feeling ill this Ambulance will get you to the hospital, but if I needed a doctor while in Tooele I would go to Salt Lake City.

Not all towns allow candy to be thrown any more but Grantsville does.  I think candy needs to come with every parade.  My reasons are a little selfish, I like to watch my children be children.

The next event after the parade is the car and craft show in the Grantsville park.  I managed to get some nice pictures of cars but not of the craft show as I was far too sore from walking.

My Niece being herself with my oldest son in the background.

When we got back to my sisters after having lunch there was a water fight involving everyone from my 4 year old Grand Nephew to my Brother in Law Ed.  It sure felt good to cool off. Then dutch oven ribs, corn on the cob, coleslaw, ambrosia and cherry cobbler for dinner. At dusk we found a good spot about a half mile from the park to watch the Gransville City Fireworks Display. The display was wonderful but in years past when I have watched it from closer some family members have been hit by falling debris. Mostly just large chunks of cardboard.

Now we come to the point where the holiday became less fun.  The TNT fireworks we bought for our own use were less than dynamite.  They lasted shorter times than in years past even though we paid the same price.  The company cutting back on chemicals to save money will likely find the cuts cost them customers.  After being disappointed by the TNT fireworks it was decided to dowse the fireworks with liter fluid and watch them burn.  The small fire this made at the end of the driveway was much more entertaining.  At least until the rain started and put it out. At this point I made a mad dash for my tent where I spent the rest of the night curled up with my husband for warmth.

Poet At Large Reviews, Real Life, Banana Bread & Karma   Leave a comment

“I have always relied upon the kindness of strangers.” Quote from the play a ‘Streetcar Named Desire’.

The Season of Greetings has always been hard for me. Sure we got toys and treats and time off from school, but it was also the time of year my parents argued the most. It was during the holidays of 1988 to 1989 that my whole world changed. My parents filed for divorce. Papa moved into an apartment on Valentine’s day and then my sister and I were forced to move into a trailer on the outskirts of town with our Mother.

After that it was really only by the kindness of strangers that we had treats and presents for Christmas at all. Always mysterious packages left on the porch or in the mailbox.

Now as an adult I try to pay back humanity for the kindnesses that have been done on my behalf. However yesterday Karma must have decided to pay me back just a little kindness to remind me why.

I was at a grocery store trying to get the two last things for our family Thanksgiving. Rolls and banana bread. In lines that were monstrously long I sat on a mart cart and waited my turn. When my purchases were finally wrung up at $10 and change the card reader would not accept my card even though I know there is still more than sufficient funds in my account. On seeing the card reader struggle with my card the man behind me said to just ring my stuff up with his.

“Happy Thanksgiving Ma’am, you’re all set.”

I sat there for a moment in disbelief and then trundled to where my oldest sister was waiting. I truly wanted to cry for the gift of kindness. It was then that i decided the best way to pass that kindness on was to tell the story for others. The holiday spirit is alive and well my friends and I can really feel it right now.

“Happy Holidays To One And All.”
