Poet At large Reviews, Convention, Life, the Universe, and Everything 31   Leave a comment

This last February 14-16 writers and artists of Science Fiction and Fantasy descended on the Provo Marriott Hotel and Convention Center  in Provo, Utah for Life, The Universe, and Everything 31.  This year marks the first time that the symposium has been held at a commercial location.  For the first 29 years of the symposium it was held at Brigham Young University and LTUE 30 was held at Utah Valley University.  The move to a commercial venue was made necessary because the Universities having dropped support for the event even though the event is still free to all students that can present a valid School ID.  This includes junior high and high school students, though attendees under the age of 16 are required to have a guardian with.

The panels and presentations at LTUE only get better each year.  I attended ones on Food in Fiction, Fictional Cartography, How to make a living as an artist, and  creating back-stories for villains.  On Thursday night there was a Valentines dance where The Gashlers provided live music.  Those not dancing could be found upstairs taking part in a Filk Circle.  For those who don’t know Filk Music is a type of Folk music with science fiction or fantasy themes.  The circle will have one or more acoustic instruments and everyone gets a chance to pick a song from the books that the circle organizers have put together. (For more on filk please look at Wikipedia.)

I came home with more Friends, more Great Memories, more Ideas and more Books to review as 2013 progresses.
